Ponts Naturels de L'Argens (Var)

Ponts Naturels de L'Argens (Argens Natural Bridges) [FR 287-288] These beautiful natural bridges are located in Var department of France near the town of Vidauban on Argens River. Please note that is a restricted area with regulation. This area is normally close to the public because these natural bridges are located between a dam and a power station. There are allot of signposts "danger" and "private property" along the way, but it is perfectly your right to came to the river. The signposts "entrée interdite/no trespassing" is not acceptable, moreover many teenagers come swimming in the Argens River under these bridges in the summer time. The signpost reports a risk of sudden flooding even when the weather is nice. The water level may rise suddenly due to water release from the dam. There is a risk of being carried away by the current and a danger of drowning. The risk is minimized in July and August, Var department knows at this time of the year the dryest period but note you visit the area at your own risk. These bridges are very impressive and worth the visit. The natural bridge and the tunnel was formed by a collapsed roof of the origninal tunnel about 150 meters long. The second bridge is the rest of the portal entrance. Author's note : It is very unfortunate that area around these natural wonders was not under protection. It result that area was denatured by hideous power lines and deafening power stations. Once on the river level, the peaceful of this place take privilege intensified by emerald pool and beautiful waterfall among travertin formation. How to get there : From the west entrance of the town of Vidauban, take at the large traffic circle road D84 toward "Le Thoronet". Drive this road 5.2km and turn right onto an unpaved road (just before some private house and just after crossing the third power line). Park and hike 100 meters to the power line tower. Turn right on an old paved road (dam maintenance road) and walk 300 meters. Then find in the grove the beginning of a steep path which go down to the Argens River (3 minutes). Once on the river, ford it at the narrowest passage and walk up stream along the bank using travertin block 100 meters to the natural tunnel entrance. The problematic part of this way is to climb a huge block bypassing a deep pool of water. A little rope can be useful. An optional way is to swim up stream in cold water (wet suit, air mattress or life jacket recommended). To visit the second bridge, you have to cross through the natural tunnel (deep pool) up stream. There are no other way to get there so go prepared.
